WESTERN CAPE BLIND CRICKET
NEWS LETTER

NEW PROSPECTS FOR SUCCESS

A new executive committee to run the affairs of cricket for blind people in the Western Cape was recently elected.  Advocate Alan Small is the president with Marlin Kolbee as Vice-president. Both are visually impaired and hope to take the game and its organisation to new levels.

Western Cape Blind Cricket scored quite handsomely by getting LOFOB’s Sports co-ordinator, Armand Bam on board as the provincial convenor. Armand is a sports science graduate with post grad qualifications in management practice. The team has many obstacles to overcome as it inherited a structure that has not seen audited financial statements in three years. A new league structure is being developed. The rest of the team brings expertise that will change cricket for the blind in the western Cape.   The full team is:

  • President – Alan Small
  • Vice-President – Marlin Kolbee
  • Secretary– Shahiemah Edwards
  • Treasurer –Lillian Fortuin
  • PRO – Philip Bam
  • Coach – Cecil Opperman
  • Co-ordinator – Armand Bam

The new executive resolved to invite player reps to be co-opted to the executive.  The CTSB rep is Michael Diergaardt. Other clubs must still nominate reps to be co-opted to the executive.

REPRESENTATION AT DISABILTY CRICKET

Armand Bam and Alan Small will represent Western Cape Blind Cricket at Disiability Cricket.

BLIND CRICKET SA ON BUMPY WICKET

Alan Small and Armand Bam represented Western Cape at the General Council meeting of Blind Cricket South Africa in Durban in June this year.

This was made possible through the generous sponsorship arranged by LOFOB through one of its members.  Alarming reports that the entire BCSA executive except for the Vice-President resigned after the “World Cup debacle” and investigations into the handling of the finances of BCSA caused quite a flutter.   Hopefully these matters will be set right by a new executive to be elected at a Biennial General Meeting to be held in Cape Town in September. Alan Small was elected interim president of BCSA and will prepare the way for setting the national body on an even wicket.

STUMPS DRAWN ON TOURNAMENT

The new BCSA Executive realised that it would not be possible to have a credible national tournament with many logistics not sorted out and decided to postpone the tournament to early next year.   It was felt that it would be better to organise once a new executive as been elected.

BUILDING STRONG TIES

The WCBC executive decided to build stronger ties with Western Province Cricket Association. Armand Bam and Alan Small will liaise with the top officials in WPCA on a regular basis to keep them informed of progress within blind cricket.  It is envisaged that the codes of practice and league rules of WPCA will be applied in blind cricket.   World Blind Cricket Council playing rules will guide the game in the Western Cape.

CLASSIFICATION OF PLAYERS

LOFOB secured an agreement with Dr C Abrahamse, Ophthalmologist who very graciously agreed to do classification assessments for blind cricketers.

WCBC LEAGUE FIXTURES

The league fixtures have been circulated.  WCBC appreciates the support given by the City of Cape Town in making pitches available.
