TANDEM CYCLING
Another unique opportunity for sighted, blind and visually impaired persons to partner each other while reaping the benefits of exercising together. The pilot and blind or visually impaired “stoker” share the workload equally (we hope) while the pilot has the added responsibility of steering the cycle.
Besides steering the tandem, an extremely interesting dynamic must exist between the pilot and stoker as the pilot has to constantly be describing the surroundings, road condition, when they are approaching a stop, turn, hill (length and gradient) and speed bumps. This definitely eliminates the aspect of cycling being an individual sport. Tandem cycling is truly one of the sports that foster’s social inclusion as we promote at LOFOB, blind and visually impaired cyclists can participate in the same fun rides and competitive events as sighted individuals knowing that their poor sight will not be a physical disadvantage to them.
LOFOB has a tandem cycling team that is coached by a volunteer, Mr Darnel Van der Spuy who has attained his national colours as a junior in cycling.
The cycling team has regular practice sessions during the cycling season.
