In 1946 Hanz Lorenzen and Sepp Reindle invented the game of goal ball to help with the rehabilitation of blinded war veterens. Goal ball is a unique team sport where visually impaired, blind and sighted persons can compete together. The game is played on a rectangular court, preferably on a smooth wooden surface measuring 18 meters in length and 9 meters wide with goal posts at each end.
Each team may consist of a maximum of 6 players, with only three being able to play at a time. All players are blind folded to enable blind, visually impaired and sighted athletes to play together. The games are 20 minutes (10 minutes per half) long and played with an audible ball (noise bells). The object of the game is for one team to roll the ball over the opponent’s goal line with a bowling action while the other team attempts to prevent this from happening.
The rules of the game are those that are adopted by the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA), the international sports governing body for sport for the blind and visually impaired.
LOFOB currently has 3 teams that practice and play regularly on Saturday mornings at the Lotus River Sport and Recreation Centre in 5th Avenue Grassy Park. The venue is provided by The City of Cape Town in partnership with LOFOB to develop the sport further.
