THE EXPERIENCE OF BECOMING A SPORTS PERSON
Upon losing my eyesight, I did not realize at first that my passion for sports could be pursued. When I joined Peninsula Blind Bowlers Club, I was eager to become part of the team and do my utmost best. When I was selected for the nationals, it felt like a dream come true. At first I wanted to decline because I felt I was not ready. I said to myself: “When will I ever be ready”.
We departed to Johannesburg on the 4th of April and I could not wait to play my first game. I played to the best of my ability and surprised most of my teammates. I won four out of my six single matches. I then played in the finals for the bronze medal in the pairs. This match I played my utmost best and we won the match. I felt so proud of myself by achieving part of my goal. I could not have done it without my director (Alan Byl), Princess Schroeder (Skip) and Graham Ward (Her Director) who all motivated me.
I see myself as a champion in a sighted world and will continue to play my best. I would like to achieve a trophy with my name on it in the near future. I hope this is an inspiration to all blind people that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
