Traditional approaches to wellness and the education and training of blind and visually impaired sportsmen and women have been inadequate over the years. LOFOB has introduced a comprehensive programme that emphasises continuous health and wellness education, illness prevention and participation in mainstream sport, recreation and leisure time activities.
The programme includes participation in team sports and practices (cricket, goal ball, futsal/ 5 A-side football, tandem cycling), individual sports (swimming, hiking), social games (draughts / checkers, ludo and dominoes), arts and culture events, leisure and recreational activities and a motivational speaker campaign.
The programme has two main target audiences. Our local outreach programme provides the necessary resources to individuals, organisations and communities that primarily serves historically disadvantaged blind and visually impaired persons within the Western Cape and our African outreach programme that in turn will serve other poorer African countries. LOFOB believes that sport and recreation activities contribute positively to the independence and inclusion of blind and visually impaired adults and children in society.
The programme is managed by a Biokineticist, Armand Bam and ably assisted by community volunteers. Three main focus areas for further development have been identified, Public and Participant Education; Facility/ Resource Development, Research, Monitoring and Developing of Knowledge and Strategic Partnerships, Infrastructure and Capacity Building.
