TABLE GAMES
This remains one of the simplest ways of developing self-confidence in persons who have recently gone blind. LOFOB has introduced as part of its adult independence training an opportunity for clients and boarders to participate in fun activities such as draughts/ checkers, ludo and dominoes.
All new clients are taught how to play these basic games and encouraged to take the skill back to their homes and engage their family and friends in something that is enjoyable for both the sighted and blind. The board games are specifically adapted to promote the use of the tactile senses. In the case on draughts the board has raised and sunken blocks making it easy for the blind or visually impaired person to feel the path on which the pieces should move. The pieces vary in colour i.e black and white as well as size to differentiate between the two.
The ludo board has raised surfaces indicating the path to move pieces as well as the pieces played with vary in shape and colour. A die with raised nodes is used to determine the number of spaces to be moved.
Dominoes remain a favourite of our clients during their sessions. Even though Braille dominoes can be used, the participants insist on playing with dominoes with indents. This can really be an experience for a new comer as most of the players are extremely competitive.
LOFOB services over 300 clients per year and it is our vision to ensure that each of our clients on completion of their training receives a set of dominoes. This specific part of the programme allows staff, volunteers, clients and boarders to participate together.
